WWF's Climate Change Programme

Air pollution has been widely recognised as one of Hong Kong's most serious environmental problem, responsible for 2000 premature deaths each year. Climate Change, showcased by Al Gore's film ‘An Inconvenient Truth' threatens the very existence of society as we know it. And at the heart of both of these problems lies the same solution – clean energy. Clean energy technologies – such as renewable energy, natural gas power, hybrid cars and super efficient appliances and buildings – can slash emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. And they are available now.

WWF's new programme will investigate the potential for Hong Kong, its people, government and businesses to take a leadership role in the development of clean energy solutions to air pollution and climate change. We will find opportunities to match Hong Kong's aspirations, skills and energy with the needs of a growing market for clean technology. This could include initiatives such as:

  • Development of an integrated programme to accelerate the deployment of clean energy to clean up Hong Kong's air.
  • Exploration of the potential to take a lead role in the development of carbon trading in Asia.
  • Establishment of a leadership programme for Hong Kong's companies to address their own greenhouse gas emissions and identify new business opportunities in the field of clean energy.
  • Increased analysis and awareness raising of the impact of climate change on Hong Kong

Over the next few months WWF will be reaching out to all constituencies to get their input. If you have any suggestions please send your input to Mr. Liam Salter, the Head of the new programme, lsalter@wwf.org.hk
