Again, WWF Asks for Your Support to Save Hong Kong Seas Dear Soko Campaign supporter, Thank you for your support to protect the Chinese white dolphins during our No-Go-at-Soko signature campaign in January 2007. This email explains how your last action made a real difference, and how signing our new marine petition can further help us conserve the dolphin and other threatened species. People's power is key to our success – For No-Go-At-Soko:
Until today, the Government has yet to make a final decision on whether or not to give approval for the LNG terminal at South Soko. WWF will keep you updated on the developments. The Save Our Seas (SOS) Petition Campaign Severe threats to marine life including the Chinese white dolphin are not confined to the Sokos. WWF urgently needs your support again, to join our "Save Our Seas" (SOS) signature petition campaign! Up until the 1950s, the waters around Hong Kong were packed with a stunning array of marine life. As a result of developmental pressure and unlimited fishing, fish populations are declining sharply, many species are under threat of local extinction, and our marine eco-systems are close to collapse. The SOS campaign aims at creating marine no-take zones and phasing out highly destructive bottom trawling from most areas of Hong Kong. Initially, we are asking the Government to: Stop fishing in our existing Marine Parks, turning them into real sanctuaries that can truly protect marine life Operate 10% of our waters as "no-take zones", banning fishing and other disturbance, so fish stocks can recover and thrive once again Stop uncontrolled fishing, by licensing all commercial fishing boats and setting catch quotas before the ecosystem collapses Your support is important to help protect Hong Kong's marine life from disappearing forever! One of the four designated marine parks at Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park is an important habitat for Chinese white dolphins. A recent study found a decline in fishes that the dolphins feed on – perhaps unsurprising as commercial fishing is still permitted fishing in the marine parks. Making all marine parks (2% of Hong Kong waters) disturbance-free areas will definitely give fish and marine mammals breathing space to survive. Please sign our SOS petition. Thank you very much for your continual support to WWF! Best wishes, |
