The Big Bird Race, or the BBR, is WWF’s longest-running flagship event and has been raising funds for conservation since 1984. These funds directly contribute to the conservation work at Mai Po Nature Reserve – listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention since 1995.

Mai Po Nature Reserve depends heavily on charitable donations for the continued management and upkeep of its vital wetland habitats. With your generous support, the wonder and beauty of Mai Po can be preserved.

The Big Bird Race 2013 will be held on the World Wetlands Day: 2 February 2013. We welcome both local and overseas participants with open arms! Please click here for more details on the event.

Event Objective

Despite having a land area of only 1,095 square kilometres, Hong Kong is an outstanding place for bird watching. Hong Kong acts as a habitat for over 500 species of birds – representing almost a third of the total number of bird species in the whole of China! You can find stunning songbirds, a rich diversity of waterbirds and rare and even threatened bird species that are difficult to find in other places.

Situated on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay wetland is an important stopover site for many migratory birds. Here, they rest, feed and replenish their energy reserves before setting off on the next stage of their long journey.

Over the years, the funds raised from the BBR have been vital to WWF’s mission to conserve and protect this internationally important wetland. These donations have helped us acquire and manage land at Mai Po Nature Reserve for both conservation and education purposes. Most of the funds raised from BBR 2013 will go towards maintaining Mai Po as a thriving, vibrant wetland which is of great global significance to both people and wildlife.
